Is the News of the World the first great newspaper casualty of the Twitter age? It is something that someone said last night and I’m pretty sure there is something in it.

Rusbridger says significant job cuts on the way in new “digital-first” strategy

Last week we heard about Guardian News & Media’s new strategy that it is calling “digital-first”, an admission that while print isn’t dead it is digital where the growth and future is.

Now we hear more details of that strategy and it is bad news as The Guardian’s editor, Alan Rusbridger, says that the move will involve “significant” job cuts over the next two years. He made his announcement on the same day that the Huffington Post said it would launch in the UK on July 6 and will no doubt be gunning for a slice of the Guardian’s traffic (not to mention the Daily Mail’s).

The MailOnline, the whale and the naked scientist

As we wrote back in April the MailOnline has speeded by the Huffington Post to become the world’s second largest digital ‘newspaper (The anatomy of a Daily Mail homepage).

How Facebook plans to change your business. Yes, even yours

The big message coming from Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg speaking at the LSE on May 26Facebook is that companies that manage to put what they call social design at the heart of their business will beat those that don’t.

Facebook’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, talked about this at length in her recent speech at the London School of Economics (LSE).  While her talk failed to answer many of the questions Facebook faces (leading many to focus instead on Sandberg’s superb delivery), social design was one concept that was communicated eloquently and, more importantly, carried intellectual weight. Is it all over for hyperlocal after The Guardian ends Guardian Local? Maybe not

Last year The Guardian wrote a piece on how the jury was still out on hyperlocal and almost a year later that remains truer than ever. No more so than for The Guardian itself, which slipped out last week when so many were away that it is to close its own pilot Guardian Local.

The New York Times launches its Tumblr blog

Way back when (okay so last June) there was, and still is, considerable buzz about Tumblr particularly among the media brands that were turning to it. There was talk that The New York Times was also getting on the Tumblr bandwagon.

Yes your next CV should definitely be an infographic [infographic]

A little while ago I asked the question will your next CV be an infographic? A lot of you liked that post as it was widely shared. If you haven’t already heard by now the answer is a big fat yes courtesy of Chris Spurlock.

A couple of weeks after I asked that question Spurlock saw his  infographic  resume (below) go viral after appearing on the Huffington Post’s college site, HuffPost College.  The next step? Huffpo hired the journalism gradate to design infographics. Nice job. Read More »

Twitter founder Biz Stone to advise AOL on doing good

As Twitter passes one billion tweets a week founder Biz Stone is join AOL as a “social impact adviser”. Nice title. No he isn’t leaving Twitter. He is clearly having way too much of a good time helping to run the business. What he is going to do is advise AOL “on cause-based initiatives” and “philanthropy”.

The idea is to take some of the lessons he’s learnt working with good causes such as Charity:Water and Product RED and inject that into AOL, but can you really change a corporate culture like that? Read More »

Huffington Post and NYTimes in war of words over aggregation

While traditionalists worry about the impact the digital era is having on journalism and publishing, they should be assured that the literary spat, at least, remains alive and well.

The latest writers to air their gripes in public are New York Times editor Bill Keller and Arianna Huffington, author of The Female Woman and founder of the Huffington Post, largely over the issue of news aggregation and to what degree Huffington Post provides original content.
