Google+ Business Page: First Impression and a Few Tips

If Google Never Existed…who would have prospered – Microsoft, Yahoo, Lycos, Excite…

After three days living without Google I’ve had a flavour of what a world where Google never existed would be like. On day two I tweeted: “Google Search is like fingers; you can get along without them, but everything is more difficult”. Yahoo! beefs up its search to stay in the race

Yahoo! may have been overtaken by Google and Bing, but with the promised enhancements to its search being launched today the portal is saying it’s still in the race.

Google of course dominates the US market, with 65% of search volume, while Bing inched ahead of Yahoo! last month for the first time, putting them both on around 13% each. By improving the aesthetics and functionality of search and offering more relevant entertainment and news content alongside, Yahoo! hopes to recapture some of its market share. Read More »

Life without Google Part 1: The Challenge

A few weeks ago a rare event happened: Google stopped working. For thousands of UK searchers, the search engine and many related websites went down for a few hours. This prompted me to wonder what a world without Google would be like – so I’m going to find out. So from Thursday, I’m going Google-free.

Yahoo! Take 2: What if they went private?

So Yahoo! is almost worthless? One idea already suggested today is a merger with AOL. But there could be another option – taking the business private.

For the record, Yahoo! is not a bad company, in fact it is very good, comfortably generating billions of dollars in revenue. However it is not as good as Google in harnessing search and making money from it.

Granted Google’s back in China, but does it matter?

After the dramatic twists and turns of the past few months, the Chinese government have decided to hand Google back its internet content provider (ICP) licence. In return, Google have promised to abide to China’s censorship regulations, and to stop automatically redirecting from Google.ch to Google.com.hk (where the censorship laws don’t apply)  as they have been doing since March this year.
