Daily Mail most shared news website, Guardian close second

Dailymail.co.uk and Guardian.co.uk are the most visible UK newspaper web sites on social networks such as Facebook, StumbleUpon and Twitter, according to some new figures.

The Mail averages about 2.9m links per week, while the Guardian is linked about 2.5m times per week, according to a study by Search metrics. The Telegraph (0.88m links), Independent (0.61m) and the Sun (0.2m) rounded out the top five. Read More »

Hands off Twitter – Switching off social networks is a non-starter #handsofftwitter

As executives from Facebook, Twitter Blackberry manufacturer, Research in Motion, today meet with Home Secretary Theresa May to discuss the riots in England can we be clear here and say clearly that the idea of switching off social networks in the event of riots or social unrest is a ridiculous non-starter. It should not be entertained in anyway shape or form. Could you imagine the government also suggesting a media blackout?

Twitter on the hunt for a PR agency

Having beefed up its communications team Twitter is on the hunt for a PR agency and is said to be in talks with a mix of large and small agencies with offices in New York, Ad Age reports.

The move follows the appointment of Sean Garrett, Twitter’s VP of communications, who joined Twitter last year. He is overseeing the search. Read More »

Social media shows its other side as tens of thousands join #Riotclean-up campaign

Clarence Road clear up in HackneyThere are two faces to social networks emerging in the few days since the riots in London began.

While sections of the media continue to point the blame at Twitter for fuelling the riots, with The Sun calling for Twitter rioters to be “nailed”, there is a much stronger trend that has emerged over night.

In opposition to looters using social networks community groups have taken back the initiative as the hashtag #riotcleanup becomes the UK’s number one Twitter trend as people started to come together to organise. Already more than 67,000 have joined social networking groups on Twitter and Facebook. It is already showing the signs of becoming a movement.

The Metropolitan Police are also using the web to publish pictures of rioters as are bloggers calling on people to identify those responsible.

It is also being reported that the Police in Glasgow have detained a 16 year old in Glasgow on suspicion of attempting to incite a riot by a message on Facebook.

Ebay has said it will cooperate fully with the investigating authorities to identify and remove any listings which are linked to criminal activity

Sun and Mail blame Twitter for fuelling London’s riots as Blackberry phone of choice

The Daily Mail and the Sun newspapers have pointed the blame in part at Twitter for fuelling the weekend riots and looting in Tottenham, Enfield, Brixton and elsewhere in London.

The MailOnline, the whale and the naked scientist

As we wrote back in April the MailOnline has speeded by the Huffington Post to become the world’s second largest digital ‘newspaper (The anatomy of a Daily Mail homepage).

Interesting report on Journalism UK about News International possibly rethinking its closed, anti-social media or iron curtain, approach to its paywall. The Sun had been due to follow same paywall model employed by The Times and the News of the World.

Twitter makes mockery of celeb super injunctions as hundreds tweet details

UPDATED 0900 The identities of a number of high profile celebrities, who are said to have taken out super-injunctions to block the media from reporting details of their private lives, have been revealed on Twitter and shared with tens of thousands of users.

Two of those named, socialite and celebrity political activist, Jemima Khan, and TV sports presenter, Gabby Logan, have denied they have taken out super-injunctions.
