“Adapt or die” – The Mail, Independent, Newsworks and Expedia on tablet take-up

Tablets are not killing newspapers, they’re offering a lifeline to the revitalisation and rebirth of ‘news brands’ beyond the dreaded paywall, say the experts. Assembled at Newsworks’ Tablet Summit, representatives from the likes of Guardian Media Group, Mail Newspapers, The Independent, Expedia and News International gave their take on the future of the newspaper industry as tablet take-up rockets. Guy Zitter group managing director at the Mail put it starkly. He said it was a case of ”Adapt or die”.

News Corp closes iPad only newspaper The Daily after losing millions

Big changes at News Corporation today as executives comes and go and in amongst those changes News Corporation has also announced the closure of its iPad only newspaper The Daily. It was launched with much fanfare, and at a cost of $30m in February 2011, but seemed to very quickly run into trouble.

The Observer to be available on iPad from Sunday

The Guardian iPad edition is being re-launched as The Guardian and Observer iPad edition with the first iPad issue of The Observer to be unveiled this Sunday (16 September).

In addition to the Monday – Saturday issues of the Guardian, on Sundays the app will now include an Observer issue, featuring the main news section of The Observer, the New Review, the sport section and the Observer Magazine.

Guardian relaunches Eyewitness iPad app with premium subscription

While The Guardian continues to resist the idea of introducing a payall it is continuing to look at ways to make its content pay and in particular its apps.

It already charges £9.99 for its Guardian iPad app, although we were told recently that it has only 17,000 subscribers, and now it has introduced a premium version for its Eyewitness iPad app as part of a relaunch as it approaches one million downloads.

Apple ‘iPad mini’ to resemble a larger iPod Touch

Apple is reportedly going to release its much talked about min iPad in the Autumn and it will look more like a larger iPod Touch rather than a smaller iPad. No speculation to suggest it will be called the TouchPad.

Pinterest apps arrive on the iPad and Android

Photo-sharing service Pinterest has launched new Android and iPad apps, as well as updating its iPhone offering.

The Android app has been one of the most requested updates to the service, said Chief Executive Ben Silbermann, speaking at the company’s first official press briefing in San Francisco.

Interesting research here from lekiosk, the French tablet and smartphone platform for reading magazines that launches in the UK this week and is aiming to be the Netflix/Spotify for magazines.

Conducted by YouGov the consumer research reveals that 1 in 20 Brits are already consuming magazine media via tablet computers, but that the idea of doing so appeals to as much as 36% of UK consumers.

The New York Observer is reporting that the future of News Corporation’s much hyped iPad only newspaper, The Daily, is hanging in the balance.

The paper reports that The Daily has been put “on watch, according to a source and it will be reassessed after the November 6 US Presidential election.

We’ve heard rumours in the past concerning the launch of a smaller iPad, and now an unnamed Samsung official has thrown more fuel on the fire. Asking not to be identified (fair enough in the circumstances), he or she told the Korea Times that Apple will launch a 7.85-inch iPad before 2012 is out.
