Sunday night the curtain closed on the 85th Academy Awards, officially drawing the two-month long run of awards around music and film to a finish. They were peppered with proud moments, like Daniel Day Lewis’ third Best Actor scoop making Oscar history, well as more confusing ones, like Prince actually endorsing Gotye’s music. But some of the most skilled performers out there are the hosts themselves. It falls to them carry the show through and make it at the least watchable, at the most memorable (and with the advent of Twitter in TV ratings, mentionable).

Sunday nights Sports Personality of the Year awards were one of several television events this year which Twitter users probably couldn’t avoid; with over 322,000 tweets mentioning the awards ceremony (either by name or the #SPOTY hashtag) on the day of the awards, 280,000 during the broadcast itself, peaking at just over 6,500 tweets per minute as Bradley Wiggins was announced as this years winner.

Usain Bolt’s victory in Sunday night’s 100 meter final saw twitter reaction peak 33 seconds after his lightening 9.63 second Olympic victory with 2,360 tweets per second.

Tweets per minute peaked at 105,000 – four times the peak level witnessed during the opening ceremony according to Starcom MediaVest Group’s analysis using EchoScreen.

With Team GB hitting gold on Day five, the Men’s Time Trial lit up Twitter in celebration of Bradley Wiggins’ win.

The Men’s Time Trial generated a total of 240,000 tweets, peaking at 12,000 per minute as Wiggins won – more than at the start of the Euro 2012 penalty shootout when Italy knocked out England.

As England rode their luck against Ukraine to pass into the quarter finals of Euro 2012, over half a million tweets were made during the game.

Key peaks were prodigal Rooney’s open goal miss at 27 minutes, followed by what would become his decisive 47 minute goal which generated over 50,000 tweets in the following five minutes alone.
