Most small businesses on Twitter want to be Half Pregnant

A pregnant Beyonce who sent Twitter soaring as she announced she was expectingThere is a great saying that you cannot be half pregnant and it is so true. Yet everyday I see small businesses on Twitter doing exactly that. They don’t want to properly commit to Twitter, they don’t want to put any time or much resource behind their Twitter presence. They sort of think they should be on Twitter because so many others are, but still totally unconvinced its for them, totally unconvinced they can gain any business from it as they truly don’t understand it. Twitter is a game changer for small businesses

I was speaking to my good friend @RobinRobson yesterday and as usual we got onto the subjects of Twitter, small businesses, corporates, banks, retailers, UK economy and supermarkets ripping us off… it was a long call….Within that call, I made the statement to Robin that I have always and continue to believe that Twitter is a game changer for small businesses.

So why do I say That? Traditional marketing ie radio, TV, billboards, newspaper etc… is all about who has the biggest and deepest pockets. Whoever can pay for more air time, more seconds at the Superbowl, more TV advert time will usually win the game. So in the traditional marketing sense its all about how much of a marketing budget you have. Read more »

Social media road block – Is it time to find yourself a new financial director?

If I had a £1 for every time I hear from the financial director at a large corporate or big brand that they want to know what is the ROI of using Twitter, I would have earnt myself thousands of pounds. My blood is boiling now with hearing this weak and poor excuse, and I am sorry it is a pathetic excuse. I am no longer going to ignore it and suggest to those brands and corporates whose Financial director is still asking for the ROI from utilising Twitter, they need a new Financial Director. Five ways to create advocates and referrals on Twitter

How do you get more advocates or referrals on Twitter? I thought that I would highlight some top ways to create advocates and receive referrals via Twitter.

Sadly for many on Twitter, they are too busy trying to sell all day long that they are missing something much bigger than their efforts. To create an ‘army of peeps’ that love what you do, really get what you are offering AND love to promote, refer and advocate you all day long is surely the ‘aim of the game’…. So how do you do that? Here are some of my top tips… Read more »

Twitter is not just about consumers…..

Companies spend thousands of pounds on creating improving and continued awareness of their brands and this is very understandable. They also spend money using social media platforms even creating online communities to build awareness and improve perception of their brands (not to mention listening in to protect their brand).

However do they ever think about their brand in terms of the labour market and not just the consumer/B2B market? Read more »

Seven questions to ask before you hire that Twitter expert

Every day I see people on Twitter talking about being Twitter experts hiring Twitter experts and outsourcing their valuable brand or business to Twitter experts.
So I thought it was time that I gave my opinion on a few things. Firstly and for the record I do actually believe that someone can be a Twitter expert (as we saw last year some don’t). But as I have always maintained expertise is all relative to your audience. Someone can be an expert when speaking to a bunch of new people, but very inexperienced when speaking to some old timers. Allow your staff to Tweet about your company – four tips

One of the things that I find very odd, is that companies allow their staff to answer the phones, use the email, give out business cards, all representing the company.

But suddenly when it comes to Twitter.. Oh no.. We have to outsource that or your all banned from using it. We don’t want any of our staff going onto Twitter and saying something that may ruin or effect our business. What a load of tosh. Read more »

Has Twitter abandoned small businesses?

One of the most common questions I get asked when delivering my talks is.. How Do Twitter make their money? Well up until now they really have not been making a lot of money. They have raised approx $360m in funding which presumably will sustain their business whilst they develop their products. Read more »

Are brands ignoring us in social media?

Always being on Twitter makes me privy to and inclusive in, many conversations and frankly it never fails to amaze me how some big brands just don’t  ‘get it’ when it comes to Twitter and other social media platforms!

I am convinced that some of the big boys are not taking advantage of the social media platforms to acquire customer knowledge, advocates or collaborative opportunities, in fact, I am not even sure they understand the significance to themselves or their company of the ‘collaborative’ medium on offer.
