Seven million Tweets are sent as Pope Francis is announced

From St Peter's Sq as new Pope Francis is announced (pic via @cswift2)There was more smoke yesterday as Twitter saw an explosion of Tweets as the Vatican announced to the world and the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square that it was to be Pope Francis.

Twitter had been hot with speculation all day as black smoke and white smoke Tweets fired across the Twittersphere as the world watched for a sign from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

After 45 minutes of post-smoke waiting, the new @Pontifex was announced and his first Tweet was sent not long after. Just the one mind.

The new Pope gets a blank Twitter slate after the Tweets of the last Pope were deleted on his resignation from office.

Overall more than 7 million Tweets about the papacy were sent, according got Twitter. As people reacted to news of Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran’s announcement of the new Pope more than 130,000 Tweets per minute were sent:

Among the thousands gathered in St Peter’s Sqaure many were waving their iPads around. They might have been trying to take photos.
