Twitter has greatly expanded its Trends product today and has added 100 more cities around the world, including twelve in the UK bringing the total to 16. The new UK cities on Twitter are Belfast, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, Portsmouth and Sheffield. They join Birmingham, Glasgow, London, and Manchester.
The UK additions, which along with other locations can be browsed by clicking “Change” in the Trends sidebar, join 88 new cities from around the world including Yokohama (Japan), Istanbul (Turkey), Ottowa (Canada), Rome (Italy) and Melbourne (Australia).
It adds continued emphasis to social and local by allowing people around the country, and the world, to get a better idea of what people are talking about on Twitter in their city.
With the update to Trends, Twitter said it now surfaced the “most breaking” news in more than 200 locations around the world.
As well as the 12 UK cities Twitter has picked out some high profile accounts in each of those Trend cities that people might like to follow:
Belfast: Follow @ourbelfastmusic for music events, news and reviews from the city.
Bristol: Football fans can follow Bristol Rovers @Official_BRFC and Bristol City@bcfctweets, or for something completely different, try @BristolFutures, Bristol City Council’s economic, green, digital and international group.
