Twitter improves Twitter Search and introduces Tweet by email

Twitter has taken the wraps off several updates and new features overnight including improvements to its search that gives more prominence to images, video and the news that is shared. The other significant change it is introducing, that is likely to see a great deal of use, is the ability to share a Tweet from directly via email. Sharing to other social networks would also be a welcome addition.

The changes to search follow the recent introduction of autocomplete, related queries and spelling corrections. Starting today Twitter users will see search results that highlight photos, videos and news shared all wrapped up in a more tailored social context.

The three new elements that you’ll see when using Twitter search are as follows:

View photos and videos first on

When you search for a person, an event or a hashtag, you will now see a grid of the most relevant media above the stream of Tweets.

See headlines and photos

You can also see media instantly in your search results stream on iPhone and Android. Photos and article summaries automatically show previews to give you a bird’s eye view on what’s happening.

Understand context

This is really helpful. While Twitter last year launched tailored ranking of search results you couldn’t see why a specific Tweet might matter more to your personally. Now with this improvement you can see context such as who favourited or retweeted right there in the Tweet.

These changes are being rolled out now on and updated mobile apps for iPhone and Android. No word on Blackberry, which retains its place as the platform firmly bringing up the rear.

 Share Tweets directly to email

This will save many people a lot of time. I share half a dozen Twitter links or more on most work days from Twitter. Doing this via a mobile app has been very simple for ages as that allows you to share via email and other social networks from within the app, but not so on

Twitter says it will be rolling out this share via email from feature to everyone over the coming weeks.

“You can email a Tweet to anyone, whether they use Twitter or not, right from your Twitter stream or from the details view of any Tweet. Just click on the ‘More’ icon next to the reply, retweet and favourite buttons in order to email a Tweet to anyone you know. You can add your own comment, and we’ll send an email with your comment and the Tweet together. Just like that,” Twitter said on its blog.

Making it easier to discover content on your iPhone and Android

Following the changes in June where Twitter introduced expanded tweets with more interactive content with a select few partners, and more recently announced that it had signed up more than 2,000 partners for expanded Tweets, it has now made it easier to see this content when you check Discover or search to find out what’s happening on your iPhone or Android.

See headlines and photos

Now you can preview photos and article summaries without a tap in Discover and search results. Twitter says “this new design for mobile brings the content of each Tweet front and centre”.

Discover popular Tweets

To make discovery more personal you can now find out what’s popular among the people you’re connected to in a simple stream of Tweets, like Discover on, by just tapping “View all Tweets” to see a continuous stream of news, photos and other stories shared by the people in your network.
