Facebook officially passes One Billion users – launches first video campaign

Facebook launches first video ad to celebrate one billion user milestoneUPDATED: Facebook today passed one billion users and launched its first brand campaign to celebrate the achievement.

The milestone was confirmed in a post by who else? Chief executive and founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The official time the one billion active users was passed was on September 14 at 12.45 PM Pacific time. That is nothing compared to the 219 billion pictures we have all uploaded during that time.

The user milestone comes only a couple of months after Facebook admitted that its fake user problem was bigger than first thought.

In August it said that as many as 83 million Facebook accounts were fake. However, no mention of that today from Zuckerberg:

“This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

“If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.

“Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

“I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote.

Chairs, bridges, great nations and Facebook

To celebrate passing the one billion user mark Facebook has created its first brand video. The ’Things That Connect Us’ it was created by US ad agency Wieden + Kennedy.

Surprisingly it is Facebook’s first ever brand video. Zuckerberg says it is designed to “express what our place is on this earth”.

It starts with small things. It starts with chairs, door and bridges and builds up to bigger and bigger things, like great nations and the universe itself, with the common thread being all that connects us.

According to Zuckerberg: “We believe that the need to open up and connect is what makes us human. It’s what brings us together. It’s what brings meaning to our lives.

“Facebook isn’t the first thing people have made to help us connect. We belong to a rich tradition of people making things that bring us together.

“Today, we honor this tradition.  We honor the humanity of the people we serve. We honor the everyday things people have always made to bring us together.

“Thanks for helping connect a billion people,” Zuckerberg said.
