Agree - same goes for social class. I was at a housewarming party a couple of months back and surprised how high-end i.e. sophisticated smartphones were taken out and used comfortably and natively by people who looked and sounded nothing like 'digital natives' - i.e. 50+, lower class /income. Certainly helps to be in touch with what's really going on.

I explored this concept in my MA dissertation 2 years ago at King's College London so it's a worth a look if you want to explore the concept of digital natives and the social web more deeply http://issuu.com/jadistillery/docs/madct_dissertation_by_jadis_tillery

Web 2.0 is comprised of platforms that are about user empowerment so it is no surprise that we see adoption rates increasing amongst wider demographics.

When we talk about the concept of digital native it is a relevant term in the context of understanding the tools that are shaping the social web. These tools have by and large been created by digital natives. Don Tapscott has spent considerable time looking at just how different digital natives are...and well..they are! They way they think, work, socialise and mobilise is different to any other generation previous.

What does this mean for marketing? This generation is setting the pace in terms of the tools that we will all be using and giving marketeers ever more means by which to connect with their audience whatever their demographic might be.

As someone who fits into that older demographic I fully agree with the thrust of Mark’s post. Let me give you an example of why one shouldn’t make assumptions. I was recently watching a premiership game in a local pub that attracts an older than average clientele. As the match got underway a fair number of the audience started using laptops and other mobile devices to bet in-play (who says that TV advertising doesn’t work!), or accessed information on players and officials – it all contributes to a ‘healthy debate’. None of them were ‘digital natives’, nor would they describe themselves as such, but all them were comfortable with the technology, and how it could be used.

Totally agree, digital media adoption has gone mainstream and this obsession with digital natives is very blinkered view of the world. It may well apply to certain layers of the media and marketing industry holding back on digital adoption but certainly not to consumers.
