What a difference a week makes – Team GB’s social media stats

Week two of the London 2012 Olympic Games has seen Team GB surge up to third in the medals table – but it’s not the only measure of their success by any stretch. In the second week, the athletes have continued to see their social media profiles soar in line with their successes – with big names such as Chris Hoy and Jessica Ennis experiencing huge growth in their profiles, whilst relative unknowns such as Robbie Grabarz also saw their online profiles boom.

Golden girl Jessica Ennis has seen the biggest success of any Team GB athletes so far, with a huge 3757% increase in Facebook likes over her weekend competition – securing almost 500,000 fans in total. Twitter confirms Olympic supremacy as Team USA edge out Team GB

A story broke this week about a US court case in Virginia where a sheriff’s deputy ‘liked’ his boss’ political opponent’s page. His boss fired him.

Thousands share Usain Bolt’s legendary tweet as he sets new Twitter record

Usain Bolt: " I am now a living legend that's for sure."

Thousands last night shared Usain Bolt’s tweet to thank his fans and confirm his legendary status as the sprinter celebrated defending his 200m Olympic title.

Bolt also set a new Olympic Games conversation record with over 80,000 tweets per minute for his 200m victory, according to Twitter.

Bolt, who had already won gold and retained his 100m title, tweeted that the win made him a “living legend”.

Twitter lights up as Team USA beat Team Japan in Olympic final [infographic]

US goalkeeper Hope Solo takes her second Olympic gold in victory over JapanTweetreach has put out some speedy Twitter analysis of last nights London 2012 Women’s Olympic football final between the United States and Japan, which saw Team USA take World Cup revenue over Japan and win 2-1.

In front of a noisy record crowd of 80,203 fans at Wembly stadium Twitter again proved how popular women’s football is after it last year set a record during the World Cup in Germany, where the US lost to Japan.

It was no different at London 2012 as 711,646 tweets were posted during the two hour game from 433,797 different Twitter accounts.
