Is social media destroying good journalism?

A feeling of apocalyptic gloom pervaded the small conference room in Dalston library, as the torrential July rain hammered on the window panes, and a small group of us huddled together to contemplate the end of journalism as we know it

Well, sort of. This London Journalism Centre event, ‘Is social media destroying journalism?’, did throw up some pretty ghastly figures, and did little to reassure us that journalists, and PRs for that matter, can sleep easy and dream of the perpetual existence of newspapers as we know them.

Let’s face it, it’s hardly something we’re unfamiliar with – everyone knows that social media is here to stay – but many of us have failed to register that the rise of social networks and other online news sources will inevitably lead to a dramatic decline in print publications. Read More »

Ethos of the John Lewis Group brings best results in social media

john lewis: Its ethos brings best results in social mediaJohn Lewis’ co-operative ethos seems to have transferred well onto social media.

The company ranked the highest in Brandwatch’s latest study, which looked at consumer satisfaction in conversations online, and how brands deal with complaints online.

Second placed was supermarket Waitrose, which is owned by the same group. John Lewis and Waitrose were two of only three brands in the 40 monitored for four months that ranked positively as part of Brandwatch’s work with Customer Service Index 2012.

Politics of the social web – how social networks indicate how you might vote

As the US presidential race heats up a revealing infographic here claims the use of various social networks and websites can indicate how the American public might vote  come Tuesday November 6.

For instance if you like to sell stuff on eBay then you might be a Republican supporting Mitt Romney voter who is also highly engaged politically.
