Financial Times is the biggest newspaper on Google+ as it passes one million followers
Someone is doing well on Google+. The Financial Times has quietly become the biggest newspaper brand on Google+ as it passed the one million follower mark.
That easily makes it the biggest and fastest growing newspaper on the Google social platform and puts it well ahead of the rest of the international newspaper market.
That easily makes it the biggest and fastest growing newspaper on the Google social platform and puts it well ahead of the rest of the international newspaper market.
It has more than twice as many followers as its closest competitor The New York Times and is far ahead of its rival The Wall Street Journal.
The New York Times with 430, 706 followers is the second biggest newspaper on Google+. Next is the The Wall Street Journal with 249, 489; The Guardian with 211, 950 followers; The Daily Mail with 80,656, The Telegraph with 1633 and barely there The Times with 351.
In developing its Google+ page, the FT says it opted to emphasise “captivating content and exclusive reporting”.
Interesting to hear that the FT considered tailoring its content to early adopters and said it might have been “easy to focus on highlighting tech and digital content on the platform”, but instead the FT chose to go beyond this remit and share a wide variety of content from correspondents around the world and has seen a strong response.
So what are the FT’s tips for success on Google+?
Part of the FT’s social media team’s strategy has been to play up to the highly visual nature of the platform and rich-media content such as videos, images and infographics have proved particularly successful.
