Spotify founder Daniel Ek joins Sunday Times rich list, worth 190m

David Ek - the Spotify founder is worth £190mDaniel Ek, the Swedish founder of the digital music download service Spotify, has joined the Beckhams in the Music Top 10 on the Sunday Times Rich list.

He has racked up a £190m fortune with Spotify, which with the launch of its Play Button is fast becoming the world’s defacto online music streaming service.

Spotify’s business is now valued at £1.2 bn and Ek, who lives in London and is an Arsenal supporter, has a stake worth £190m in the company.

That has all been built in the six years since he started Spotify in 2006 with Martin Lorentzon. They went on to launch the service in the US last year.

The inclusion places Ek’s name alongside the far better-known names of music such as Sir Mick Jagger and Simon Cowell.

Last week it was announced that Coca-Cola was to partner with Spotify to help both brands expand around the world. They will produce a Coke app based on the music service in time for the Olympics.

It follows Spotify opening itself up to publishers with the Play Button. This is in effect Spotify’s “like button” and it means Spotify start to appear on website’s globally as online publishers sign up to feature songs on their websites. Initial partners including The Independent, GQ and MSN.

The official Rich List guide will be in the Sunday Times on April 29, and it can be viewed online here.

To celebrate the launch of the 2012 Rich List, The Sunday Times has launched the Rich List Profile app on Facebook.

You get to ask yourself the question what would you do with £100m pounds?

Are you a natural philanthropist or would you splurge it all on an ostentatious house in Barbados with a yacht in tow?  You can compare yourself with Rich Listers including Simon Cowell, JK Rowling and Roman Abramovich and be in with the chance to win an iPad 3.  You can Play Rich List Profile here.
