Google Drive set to kill Dropbox with desktop folders and 5GB free storage

Google Drive is – in theory – days away from a big unveiling and the cloud storage system looks like it will take on rivals like Dropbox, iCloud and SkyDrive in the free space fight.

We previously moaned about Google only offering 1GB of free storage versus 2GB for Dropbox, 5GB for Apple’s iCloud and 25GB for Microsoft’s SkyDrive. And it seemed Google listened as The Next Web is reporting that Google Drive will roll out as a free app for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS with 5GB free storage to start.

The leak from a mystery Google partner also points to Google Drive appearing as desktop folders on Windows PCs and Macs, possibly with auto-synced contents.

We might also be able to edit our documents within the Google Drive smartphone apps if we want to particularly smash our data plan to smithereens.

So is it time to say so long Dropbox? We hope not but Google looks set to drop one convenient cloud bomb on us next week.

Would you put ALL your eggs in one basket? Personally, I’m keeping dropbox, even if I do only have 2Gb to play with.
I think google is getting out of hand now. They’re already everywhere in my work life, (internet/office suite/mobile) and they’re moving into cars, banking and other stuff.
How long before I’m buying my groceries from them?

I agree – I’ll stay with Dropbox. Google provide enough services to me I rely on it (but all can be replaced, if not to the same level of quality)

Also, through paying for an upgrade and referring other people, I’ve got 70GB+ storage, synching across computers, a phone and iPad.

The DropBox iPad app allows you to view MS Office and PDF files already, so it’s a file viewer too.

I’m sure the masses will stumble into giving Google more data and becoming more reliant on them – but I’ll pass.

Will we see adverts based on all the contents of the files we upload to the google cloud? How creepy? And potentially embarrassing.
