Yankees and Red Sox lead Major League Baseball in social media [infographic]

New York Yankees: We three: Jorge Posada (retired 2011), Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter talkWith the Major League Baseball season starting tonight with a match-up between the St Louis Cardinals and the newly named Miami Marlins, who celebrate moving to a new stadium, here’s a timely infographic here from social media agency Banyan Branch looking at social media and baseball.

The agency has spent time looking at data from Twitter and Facebook to see who has the power in the MLB, not at the plate, but in social media.

Maybe no surprise to find out that the world’s biggest baseball club, the New York Yankees, top the table followed by their rivals the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees have 5.3 million Facebook fans and 550,000 followers on Twitter. That puts them along way ahead of the Red Sox who they finished ahead of last season.

There is big gap between the Yankees and the Red Sox and the next biggest team the Philadelphia Phillies in terms of Facebook fans, they have 1.2m, but the Phillies lead the MLB in terms of Twitter followers with around 680,000.

While the Yankees lead in terms of total number of fans it is the smaller baseball franchises of the MLB that are most active on Twitter with 2010 World Series winners the San Francisco Giants leading followed by the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays.

The most valuable tweeter position goes to one of baseball’s nicest players, New York Yankee right fielder Nick Swisher followed by Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson.
