Don’t tell the boys!

Pssssst…raising awareness about breast cancer is back on Facebook, with a new viral campaign that women are sharing. Girlfriends have told me not to let onto the boys what’s going on, and we’ll see if this one reaches the success that we’ve seen from previous campaigns.

Last year, women around the world updated their status on Facebook to reveal what colour bra they were wearing. Red, white, beige, black, and leopard print was showing up all across Facebook, catching the attention of men. The phenomenon captured news headlines, and reports said that no one was sure exactly where it all started.

Another breast cancer awareness campaign “I like it on…” made the rounds, with everything from “I like it on toast” to “I like it on the bed” being status updates.

Mysteriously again, a new campaign is asking women to choose a month you were born, and the day you were born, and use it to update status as follows:

“I am going to…for…months.”

January – Mexico

February – London

March – Miami

April – Dominican Republic

May – France

June – St. Petersberg

July – Austria

August – Germany

September – New York

October – Amsterdam

November – Las Vegas

December – Columbia

For example, I was born in July on the 3rd, so I updated my status to say “I’m going to Austria for three months.” The idea is doing one thing – confusing people greatly. When I updated my status over the weekend, friends immediately left shocked comments, wondering what was going on.

Will this year’s breast cancer awareness viral be taken up by millions of women? This campaign seems a bit more elusive, and doesn’t have the fun sexiness of the past efforts. And maybe the boys will hear about it and adopt it for their own status (especially after reading this blog post).
