We’ve been watching the Obama team as it continues to stretch its social media muslces having signed up to Google+ – in November adding to activity on Twitter, blogs, Tumblr, Facebook and Foursquare as the Barack Obama runs for re-election in 2012.

Now add Instagram to that list. The photo sharing service had an excellent 2011 as user numbers soared to around ten million. Add Barack Obama to that number.

The Obama team will be sharing photos through its @barackobama Instagram account and asking asking supporters to share their photos from the campaign trail with the tag #obama2012.

Instagram is proving a hit as it comes to coverage of the 2012 US election campaign and media groups such as NBC News, ABC World News and the Washington Post armed their reporters with iPhones for the campaign trail where they have been snapping photos  at debates and town hall meetings across the country and offering a unique look into the 2012 elections in the process.
