Twitter parts company with PR agency Edelman

Twitter has parted company with PR firm Edelman after only appointing the agency in September. The agency was appointed with a brief to help boost Twitter’s profile with consumers, which was seen as a sign that the social network wanted to take more control of its communications message.

The end of the relationship with Edelman comes after a tumultuous few weeks in Twitter’s communications and marketing teams. Twitter in quick  succession parted company with its head of communications, Sean Garrett, as well as its communications director, Lynn Fox, and its head of marketing Pam Kramer.

Following the departure of its senior commuications execs who would have been responsible for appointing Edelman the agency has followed Garrett and Fox out of the door.

The relationship went south within a few weeks, according to people familiar with the matter, largely because of the management changes at Twitter.

According to Ad Age one Edelman executive said that the agency was asked to present some ideas on how they could engage consumers:

“We did what we were asked and sort of moved on. It wasn’t material for our [West Coast] operations, let alone Edelman. It would not have a been a large account for us or for anyone other than a very small boutique. It was less about the money than the opportunity to work with Twitter.”

It doesn’t appear that Twitter intends to replace Edelman, which prompts the question of whether the company needed a big PR firm in the first place. It has 100 million global users and is likely mentioned thousands of times daily in press reports worldwide, so the notion that it needs assistance seems unlikely, Ad Age reports.
