London Fire Brigade to hold first live Bonfire Night twitterthon over blaze fears

London’s fire chiefs are saying that the number of fires on Bonfire Night could rocket this year due to Guy Fawkes night falling on a Saturday.

The Brigade is so concerned about the number of fires, it will be holding the world’s first ever live Bonfire Night twitterthon in a bid to reduce the number of fires caused by raging bonfires and out of control fireworks. Read More »

My big problem with ‘engagement’

In a recent post high priest of web measurement, Avinash Kaushik, suggests that we look to try to measure four core metrics that will help tell us how we’re doing with our social media efforts:

  • 1. Conversation – the rate at which people respond
  • 2. Amplification – the distance those discussions travel
  • 3. Applause – Electronic approval such as Likes, +1s etc
  • 4. Economic Value – Amount of money your efforts actually generate

The 25 most valuable blogs in the US – 2011

24/7 Wall St has published its list of the 25 most valuable blogs in the US. It is an interesting list with interesting price tags attached showing that blogs continue to be huge business. Combined they are worth almost $1 billion.

While the Huffington Post is no longer represented, it is so much bigger than that these days and seeems to have ascended to become a news organisation in its own right, the list shows how these well funded and increasingly well resourced sites compete with traditional media. Read More »

Google+ bounces back, traffic up in October

Google+ notched a 30% increase in page views in October compared to last month, although usage is still way down from the week the service experienced a surge in traffic after it dropped its invitation-only access, according to new figures from Experian Hitwise.

In the first four weeks of October, Google+ received about 6m visits per week, 30% more than the first four weeks of September, but still  down from the 15m visits the website recorded after its public launch in the week ending 24 September, as reported by PCWorld. Read More »
