What is the next trend in social media? Four to watch including a Twitter rival

What’s next in social media? Sometimes it feels very much like people can not see beyond Facebook and Twitter giving us a kind of tunnel vision.  Robert Scoble gives his take on the companies that you might want to be watching out for naming Katango, Color and Path’s new app called ‘With’ as three to watch out for.

Interesting the fourth project he highlights is a possible Twitter competitor. He’s right when he says that Twitter needs a competitor, but taking on Twitter will be a tough one, but it looks like several are considering the challenge.

Writing on Quora Scoble says that we are already well into the next trend in social media. He says that is trying to build a better social graph. Here’s his companies to watch:

  1. Katango. This service, coming out this summer, looks at Facebook and finds interesting social circles in it. It is mind blowing. I wish I could say more, but we’ll have a video up soon on this one.
  2. Color. They are trying to find your social circles based on being in the same place as other people and taking some action (first one is taking photos together, like at a concert or a wedding). I know they are struggling right now, but what they are trying to do is interesting an example of this trend.
  3. Path’s new app called “With.” With is pretty cool. You take a photo with someone, tag them, tag where you took it, tag what you were doing. That data will be useful in future for building intimate social graphs and new kinds of experiences.
  4. A Twitter competitor? I also had a look at what Bill Gross [of UberMedia] is doing at IdeaLab. That’s one to watch too, he’s building the future of microblogging. Some will say it’s a Twitter competitor, but I really like his thinking and Twitter needs a competitor anyway — how many new features have we gotten in Twitter lately? Not many.

A Twitter rival is the one that will grab the headlines and there has been talk for a while about this. Reports emerged that UberMedia was working on a Twitter rival back in April after it lost out on a deal to buy TweetDeck to Twitter.

UberMedia, however, is not the only one looking to shake-up the microblogging market. Earlier this month we reported that Chinese Twitter rival Sina’s Weibo was preparing to launch its own very popular microblogging platform in the US shortly.
