Inspired by Facebook Israeli couple name their baby ‘Like’

Okay, so first we had a man in Egypt naming his newborn daughter “Facebook” during the Arab Spring and now it looks like this trend has leaked across the border.

A couple in Israel have named their baby girl ”Like’ after being inspired by Facebook and apparently rejecting alternatives Noa, Maya and Tamar, which are the most popular for girls in Israel.

The couple, Lior and Vardit Adler, from Hod Hasharon, north-east of Tel Aviv, said that it was important to give their children names that are not used anywhere else. Why?

They did it with their first two kids also naming them Dvash (honey in Hebrew, which is nice) and Pie. Surely that means the mother will occasionally have to shout “Like Pie” when she calls her kids in from play. Did they not think of this? Some people, I tell you.

“If once people gave Biblical names and that was the icon, then today this is one of the most famous icons in the world,” Lior Adler said.

He added: “In our opinion it’s the modern equivalent of the name Ahava [Love]. It’s just my way of saying to my fantastic daughter, ‘Love’.”

Apparently when Lior Adler announced Like’s arrival on Facebook she was very popular: “When I posted her picture and name on Facebook I got 40 ‘likes’,” he told the newspaper. Considering that I have only a little more than 100 friends on the network that’s a lot.”

Let’s hope that Like and Facebook grow-up to be friends. Peace kids.
