Is there room for another Tumblr? Webdoc offers lots of choices
I have been having a little look at a new social platform called Webdoc. It is a bit like Tumblr or a “modern Blogger” and it allows posts to be quickly pulled together in a free form style.
The free form nature allows pictures, videos, interactive apps, slideshows or web services such as Google Maps and Twitter to be pulled into posts or docs (as you can see in this image). Pretty useful. Will it catch on though?
It is very similar in many ways to Tumblr except it is very easy to pull in so much rich information and allow others to jump in and contribute. It could be great for fans of bands for instance. Other fans can contribute their own pics and updates. In a similar way it could be great for crowdsourcing.
The beauty of Webdoc, and why you could imagine it being used by people, organisations and brands, is that it is very simple. It is the same reason I like Tumblr.
As one user experimenting with Webdoc put it (see his Webdoc here): “You know, just to see if it’s worth doing more with. And in the case of webdoc, which is kinda like Tumblr if you could design a new theme with every single post, we think our experience in trying to do the same type of thing with CSS and HTML might just come in handy. So, anyway, rather than just screwing around, let’s do what we do best — write newsy stuff.”
Here’s a video interview that Robert Scoble did with the founders at the Next Web a week ago in Amsterdam. He describes it as a platform that “helps you build a new kind of rich, expressive, site. Think a modern Blogger or Tumblr”.
Like every other new social service out there Webdoc faces several tough challenges. One is about adoption. Will people use it on a wide enough scale and if they do how it will make money? The founders talk about freemium models but as good and interesting as Webdoc’s is it launches into a crowded marketplace with a number of similar services competing for people’s attention.
I like it and can see people turning to as it makes it so easy to pull cool stuff together and create really fun posts.
Here’s another video from Webdoc itself thats you through some of the things you can do.
