US politicians go viral with elaborate Rick Roll

Rick Astely is never going to give you upWill Rick Astley never go away? I’m not even asking that question I’m just wondering if this is what Rick Astley is thinking as ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ goes viral, yet again, in a wonderful prank in the US.

This time it is courtesy of the Oregon State Legislature. It uploaded a video of members of the  legislature who had slipped lyrics to Astley’s 1987 hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ into their speeches. Read More »

What is the size of the mobile market? [infographic]

Microsoft Tag has just released a neat infographic highlighting statistics on how people are using mobile phones in 2011. I also dug up a great video that featured late last year with an array of great mobile “growth” statistics, stats and facts for 2011.

The infographic shows that over one billion of the worlds 4+ billion mobiles phones are now smartphones, and 3 billion are SMS enabled (weirdly, 950 million mobile phones still don’t have SMS capabilities). In 2014, mobile internet usage will overtake desktop internet usage and already in 2011, more than 50% of all “local” searches are done from a mobile device. Read More »

Five reasons why charities are doing so well in social media

Social media has had a large part to play in driving donations towards relief efforts to help those affected by the tsunami in Japan. Some have been received well, like the initiative by LivingSocial that matched users’ $5 donations to give more than $2m to relief efforts. One of the things that I find very odd, is that companies allow their staff to answer the phones, use the email, give out business cards, all representing the company.
