I was intrigued this morning not to see that the ‘royal wedding’ is trending on Twitter, but that it was today’s promoted tweet.

Surely, I thought, the royal family hasn’t taken to Twitter in a bid to shore up support for the monarchy – and of course, they haven’t. But Slim-Fast has, in a bid to make itself the diet of choice for brides-to-be.

TV, radio, mobile or web – how will you follow the Royal Wedding?

Hello Magazine royal wedding appIt used to be so straightforward. When the Queen got married in 1947 you listened to the live radio broadcast. When Charles and Diana wed in 1981 you watched it on the telly (on one of three channels).

Now in 2011 we are spoiled for choice in coverage of Wills and Kate’s big day. And with a third of smartphone users having downloaded royal wedding-related apps, it’s a fair bet that we’ll be following events on more than one medium – watching the ceremony on TV while posting cheeky comments on Twitter.

Facebook is testing its Groupon rival, Deals On Facebook

Deals On Facebook: now being tested

Facebook’s rival to Groupon, Deals on Facebook, is launching with the social network revealing details of the first test markets.

At the moment you’ll have to be in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and, of course, San Francisco, to benefit from the test but in a blog announcing Deals on Facebook, the company said it would be expanded to other cities in the future.

Four web design predictions for 2011

For a design medium that is less than 20 years old, Web design has undergone a lot of changes and evolution. The sites that were common in the mid-nineties look nothing like the sites today (for the most part) and the medium is one defined by constant evolution and change.

Washington Post puts faith in social web with launch of $10m personalised news site

The Washington Post has given the clearest indication yet that it does not plan to launch a paywall any time soon as it unveils a personalised news site called Trove.com that aggregates news across subjects of interest and important headlines of the day.

Relying on a combination of old fashion editorial expertise, social media and a heavy dose of Facebook Connect Trove creates a customised  “news experience” that factors in a reader’s likes and dislikes aggregating from around 10,000 sources. It also promises news advertising opportunities with Ford on-board as the first sponsor. Read More »

Music and games firms take their leave of MySpace

Music used to be MySpace’s strong suit, but Adweek reports that some in the music industry are now abandoning the social network.It carries a report about music ticketing startup Ticketfly. A natural fit for the News Corporation (for now) owned social network, but the site has almost zero dealings with MySpace. Its founder says the music business is now all about Twitter and Facebook.

The story comes in the same week when social gaming firm Zynga is also reported to be pulling some of its games from MySpace as well. Read More »

Facebook Studio – the future of social networks

This week Facebook launched their new stand-alone community site aimed at creative’s – the Facebook Studio.

The site is aimed at ad agency creative’s and offers a forum where they can share ideas, comment on campaigns and learn more about what it takes to create a successful brand page.
