Google launches +1 to take on Facebook’s Like button

Okay, so no Google Me, the much speculated about Google social network (and Facebook killer), but instead what we have got is+1. It is essentially Google’s version of the Facebook Like button. Its way of recommending content on the web.

Google is starting to roll it out immediately. What do you think about the name? Personally, while the idea makes perfect sense, the name less so. Google’s problem was that it had to do something different to Facebook and its use of the word “like”, which I’m sure heavily influenced the naming of this product. Read More »

Salesforce.com buys social media monitoring platform Radian6 for $326m

Salesforce.com has acquired one of the leading social media monitoring platforms out there, Radian6, for a whopping $326m (£215m). There’s money in that there social media measurement.

Radian6 is used by lots of big agencies and apparently counts half of the Fortune 100 among its users including the likes of Dell, GE, Kodak, Molson Coors, Pepsico, and UPS to monitor. Read More »

Twitter: senior mangement changes

Evan Williams, one of the co-founders of Twitter and its erstwhile chief executive, is taking another step back from the company to work on something completely new, the details of which remain under wraps.

Williams’ announcement comes amid rumours that Jack Dorsey, another Twitter co-founder (and the sender of the first tweet), is planning a return to the social network, either as chief product officer or CEO. The CEO role is currently filled by Dick Costolo, who took over from Williams last October.

Managing the social media revolution – Facebook bans Palestinian page

There have been a few posts cropping up these last few months on how social media sites are dealing with controversial content that is coming out of the uprisings in the Middle East be it graphic in nature or highly partisan. It is a tricky issue.

Of all the topics in the Middle East right now there has never been one that is more combustible than Israel. Now Facebook has bowed to complaints from Israeli government officials and Jewish groups in the US and taken down a group run by Palestinian supporters. Read More »

Lost in Measurement: Can an obsession with measuring social media cloud our judgement?

Are you a social media measurement obsessive? It’s something that’s been front of mind for me over the last couple of weeks brought on by a number of factors: Dell’s B2B Huddle with Brian Solis, which I attended; a training session I ran on social media measurement and a series of blogs ranking “influencers”, such as this one on Wallblog. Measurement sure is perplexing.

While developing an impressive Klout score appears to be increasingly essential I am still not convinced it’s a clear measure of ‘influence’. Read More »
