New York Times paywall in final test — launching shortly

The New York Times Company has issued a short update on its delayed paywall, which was meant to launch last month, but will now instead “launch shortly”.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference today in New York Janet Robinson, president and chief executive officer said that the metered paywall was in final testing.

“The pay model for NYTimes.com is in the final testing phase, and we expect it will launch shortly,” Robinson said.

In January it was reported that New York Times will charge less than $20 a month.

While some aren’t going to see that as good news there was some real good news with Robinson saying digital advertising revenues in February were up in the mid-single digits (print advertising was also up).

News of the New York Times paywall comes in a busy week for paywall news. Yesterday, Variety took the correct step in launching a blog outside of its paywall (I argued that this is what The Times should do too).

Elsewhere UK regional newspaper daily the Express & Star revealed plans to launch its paywal. The launch will make it the first major regional daily to do so.
