Do you need a social media detox? [infographic]

Do you speak in 140 character bursts? Do you get depressed or anxious when you tweets are not retweeted? Do you speak in TLA’s or spell out the letters L-O-L in everyday conversation?

Are you mayor or more than half a dozen places? Do you get into an uncontrollable rage when one of your social networks is down? If you’re answering yes to any of the above, seriously, take a break. Lol. Enjoy. Read More »

Google launches +1 to take on Facebook’s Like button

Okay, so no Google Me, the much speculated about Google social network (and Facebook killer), but instead what we have got is+1. It is essentially Google’s version of the Facebook Like button. Its way of recommending content on the web.

Google is starting to roll it out immediately. What do you think about the name? Personally, while the idea makes perfect sense, the name less so. Google’s problem was that it had to do something different to Facebook and its use of the word “like”, which I’m sure heavily influenced the naming of this product. Read More »

Managing the social media revolution – Facebook bans Palestinian page

There have been a few posts cropping up these last few months on how social media sites are dealing with controversial content that is coming out of the uprisings in the Middle East be it graphic in nature or highly partisan. It is a tricky issue.

Of all the topics in the Middle East right now there has never been one that is more combustible than Israel. Now Facebook has bowed to complaints from Israeli government officials and Jewish groups in the US and taken down a group run by Palestinian supporters. Read More »

Lost in Measurement: Can an obsession with measuring social media cloud our judgement?

Are you a social media measurement obsessive? It’s something that’s been front of mind for me over the last couple of weeks brought on by a number of factors: Dell’s B2B Huddle with Brian Solis, which I attended; a training session I ran on social media measurement and a series of blogs ranking “influencers”, such as this one on Wallblog. Measurement sure is perplexing.

While developing an impressive Klout score appears to be increasingly essential I am still not convinced it’s a clear measure of ‘influence’. Read More »

Just a reminder how much traffic there is to go around. While Facebook might dominate (by numerous country miles) Orkut is apparently still hanging in there. Qzone with 37 million comes up as the biggest social network in China.

Twitter is fourth placed in this table sourced from Google as of February 2011 with Russian Facebook like site Odnoklassni.ru in fifth ahead of LinkedIn. What would be interesting to know is how many of us are really active on multiple networks? Enjoy. Read More »

Is ‘Twitter Elite’ the next buzzword in marketing?

If you’re used to tailoring your marketing campaigns to reach that category of people dubbed the opinion leader, you might have a new buzzword (buzzphrase?) to learn: Twitter Elite.

Elites: survey names top five in each category

Why? Because a new academic survey claims that a tiny proportion of Twitter’s users — roughly 20,000 individuals — take up about 50% of Twitter’s attention.
