Our multichannel retail future

We’ve been saying for it ages, but now Deloitte and John Lewis have independently confirmed it: retail brands must invest in multichannel operations or risk missing out on sales opportunities.

Before Christmas, global consulting giant Deloitte’s retail survey produced some compelling figures to back this up, finding that shoppers that use more than one channel such as stores, online or catalogues before making purchases spend 82% more per transaction than those that only shop in stores. Harley Davidson launches first crowdsourced ad

The first advertisement to come out of Harley-Davidson’s partnership with the crowdsourcing ad agency Victors & Spoils has broken on US cable TV after appearing on YouTube at the beginning of February.

Harley Davidson ad: creative concept came from crowd

The state of the Twittersphere as of February 2011

A really useful state of things presentation on where Twitter is at as of February 2011 put together by Kathryn Corrick, February 2011. She has some good stats here including the number of daily active accounts which stands at around 14 million out of a possible 200 million. Although there are maybe as many as 40 million tweeting each month.

Also interesting to know that the vast majority of users still access Twitter via Twitter.com. And yes with her 8.2 million followers people are gaga for Lady Gaga.

Left wing US journalist Nir Rosen yesterday found out just what Twitter was really about as he spewed out a series of deeply unpleasant tweets (“the most reviled Tweets on the planet”, as one put it) as he joked about the attack on CBS journalist Lara Logan in Cairo.

He proved, as he later admitted, that some, so much more than others, need to be careful when it comes to Twitter. While it might seem like a huge bar just about everything you say will be heard. Rosen though should have known better. Read More »

One of the big news stories coming out of Mobile World Congress this week isn’t a new launch, it’s what won’t be launching any time soon: the Twitter-branded phone.

HTC ChaCha: one of two Facebook-branded handsets

It makes sense that Twitter is not going down this route — even though 40% of tweets are sent from mobile devices, Dick Costolo, chief executive of Twitter, told the congress that “Twitter flows seamlessly across platforms, that’s what we are trying to accomplish.”

Should Facebook merge Places & Deals?

In 2010 Facebook launched “Places” which was its answer to Foursquare. It made a lot of sense & really started to capture the beauty of Facebook on mobile. It’s been kept pretty simple, with no fun or frolics such as becoming the mayor or earning badges & social status, but none the less it’s fast become the way to tell your friends what you’re up to without having to write a long status update.
