Egyptian father names his child ‘Facebook’

Parents hey? But if you want a sign of the impact of social media on the popular uprising in Egypt then look no further.

CNN reports that a man in Egypt has named his newborn daughter “Facebook”.  This child is truly one of the (social media) revolution.

Gamal Ibrahim, a 20-something, gave his daughter the name “to express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 youth,” according to a report in Al-Ahram, one of Egypt’s most popular newspapers.

Many young people used Facebook and other social media networks to organize the protests, which began January 25 and ultimately led to the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak after 30 years in power.

Still while that is all very nice. I hope Gamal Ibrahim has second thoughts. Imagine when the kid gets to the playground? I’m taking credit here for avoiding the obvious bad taste joke. That must have already/is bound to be made elsewhere.

Still could have been worse. Could have been Twitter. I hope Mark Zuckerberg’s people get on the blower and offer the appropriate support this child of a social media powered revolution will require.
