Admen go to digital school – meet the real students [IV]

Blog day 4 -  Weapon 7 has a close relationship with Bucks College. Only wise really, it was the first place I used to look when I was creative directing and looking for young talent to mould in my own ghastly image.

I sat in as the Bucks students presented their ideas on the project that Weapon 7 had set for them. My sympathies were running high, me just being an oily rag myself, in W7 land, and also suffering from unreasonable nerves when I’m confronted with a roomful of what I still consider to be “grown ups”.

To be fair, I didn’t see all the groups. The ones I did see had seized on the principle of “wouldn’t it be cool if…” which seems to be the driver for a lot of thinking around here. However along with the cool ideas there was a fair amount of wishful thinking- the digital equivalent of the camera instruction that reads “Open on a man crossing the road wishing it was Thursday”.

I suspect this is brought about because with a lot of this work the purpose is to set the hare running. After that it’s over to the audience. How far and how fast it will run, for how long, nobody actually knows…More of this in the next blog.
