Facebook makes 600 million friends

Facebook logoFacebook statistics portal SocialBakers is reporting that the social network now has 600 million users.

It also reveals where the biggest gains have been made over the last six months.

Over 20.7 million new users have signed up in the US, 8.3 million in India, 8 million in Indonesia, 6.2 million in the Philippines and 5.8 million in Mexico. Read More »

News Corp and Apple push back The Daily launch

As reported earlier this week Rupert Murdoch and Apple CEO Steve Jobs had been planning to jointly launch News Corporation’s iPad newspaper, The Daily, next week on January 19. Not so, apparently.

AllThingsD is reporting that the launch of The Daily has now been delayed by a number of weeks although no official reason has been given. Read More »

Groupon plans IPO, company valued at $15bn

Earlier this week deals website Groupon announced it had raised nearly $1bn from investors and now the New York Times is reporting that the two year old Chicago-based start-up is pushing ahead with plans for an IPO that could value it at $15bn.

Libertarian and Facebook hedge funder Thiel sees fund slump 90%

Peter Thiel the guy who got very rich by co-founding PayPal and investing early in Facebook once had a hedge fund worth an astronomical $7.2bn. He now presides over a fund that that is down about 90% with long term clients suffering losses of 65% from a mid-2008 peak, according to a long piece on Bloomberg.

The Hedge fund guy and libertarian, who is German by birth, however, isn’t going to be hitting the unemployment line any time soon. He still has a fortune of $1.1bn, according to Forbes September 2010 issue and apparently employs a personal butler. As you do. Read More »

Social Media Week LondonSocial Media Week London takes place from 7 to 11th February 2011 as part of a series of global events focusing on emerging trends in social and mobile media.

The theme is ‘Social Society’, exploring how local and regional societies, cultures and economies are becoming more integrated and empowered through a global network of communication.

There are over sixty events planned for the week so far but organisers say there’s room for lots more. They’re looking for agencies and brands to host events, and speakers who can give a unique perspective on social media.
