Paywalls are having little effect on newspaper web traffic

Here’s an interesting one. Steven Brill’s Journalism Online paywall system has put out a survey that claims newspapers using its paywall technology are noticing little difference in terms of traffic or advertising revenue.

The default belief is that web traffic evaporates as it is thought have done at The Times where it has put up a impenetrable anti-social media paywall. Not so elsewhere. Read More »

Seriously? Apparently so. Cheezburger the company behind the LOLcats and FAIL Blog, and other internet memes has raised a whopping $30m from venture capitalists.

Cheezburger, under founder Ben Huh, has built a network of websites that now attracts almost 16.5 million people and racks up around 375 million page views per month. Not too shoddy. Read More »

Apple’s Steve Jobs takes medical leave of absence

Apple has released an email to the media today from CEO Steve Jobs explaining to staff that he is to take another leave of absence.

AOl’s Patch struggles for traffic in tough hyperlocal market

According to a New York Times report, AOL’s hyperlocal business Patch.com is in some quarters struggling for traffic.

Stories are getting as little as 100 page views and 500 views is considered a success. The problem is that such crumbs of traffic are hardly going to pull in much advertising revenue, which has proved the downfall of past failed hyperlocal ventures. Read More »

Murdoch’s The Daily turns to Tumblr to drive social media

Rupert Murdoch’s planned iPad newspaper, The Daily, is to use Tumblr as part of its social media strategy to drive subscriptions.

Good news to hear that it has a social media strategy as last week the indications were that the now delayed  Daily would have a website that would only be accessible to subscribers like the the anti-social media approach of The Times. Read More »

Minneapolis ad agency Campbell Mithun is to select its next bunch of interns based on their tweets. This is so bound to catch on.
