Virgin’s iPad magazine ‘Project’ hits Apple app store – “Shockingly Good”

Virgin’s iPad only magazine has gone on sale on the Apple app store today featuring a mix of international culture, entertainment, design, business and travel.

The debut issue has Jeff Bridges on the cover, ahead of the launch of the reboot of the movie ‘Tron’, and features on Jaguar’s 205 MPH Hypercar as well as a 3D tour of Tokyo.

It is available to download for $2.99 or £1.79 and features exclusive “electrified cover”, videos and an audio interview with Bridges on one of his best-known roles.

Taking advantage of the digital format you can actually hear Jaguar’s 205mph Hypercar and its jet engines roar and see how how the search for a slightly nicer home planet is going in Earth 2.0.

Project is being edited by former Arena and FHM editor Anthony Noguera with the Bridges cover story was written by Christopher Tennant (editor, digital entrepreneur and author once described by PJ O’Rourke as a ‘paragon of naked wit’). The cover shoot and videos were created by legendary photographer Warwick Saint, who has shot for everyone from Vanity Fair to Sports Illustrated.

Noguera, said:  “I must be the luckiest editor alive. To be given the opportunity to create a magazine that is completely unique and innovative, to work with like-minded journalists, contributors and advertisers who are just as passionate and excited as I am about Project has been inspiring.”

The launch issue also includes controversial author Rachel Botsman; Rene Redzepi, the chef behind the world’s best restaurant; Yamauchi Kazanori, the visionary games developer behind Gran Turismo game series; and Soho House’s Nick Jones.

Launch advertisers include Ford UK, Lexus, American Express, Panasonic, Ford Canada and Kronenbourg 1664.

The first two reviewers of the Virgin’s iPad magazine give the title a thumbs up with Kenneth Tong writing that it was shockingly good “that it is actually a decent product”. Go team Richard Branson.

“I was greeted by an animated introduction that for once is pertinent to the content! Overall, it is a magazine done right – is this the future of publishing?! I err with – maybe. The iPad is still a costly device, although it is more efficient than walking to a shop or getting to a subscription, and allegedly it is updated throughout the month… I’ll see if this is the case; but more importantly, I’ve always known the Founder to have started off with Magazines, I am happy to see him return to what he is good at, as the Virgin Brand just wasn’t what it was (and yes I used to fly Virgin Upper Class),” Tong wrote.

While Sturgeman said that it was unlike any of the other magazines he had seen on iPad.

“Clearly designed with iPad user in mind. Ran really smoothly on my iPad too. Images look great and the videos really cool, especially stuff on the ‘dude’ Jeff Bridges and Tokyo. Wanted more on the Jag, tho. Well worth £1.79.”
