Twitter mobile use rockets 60%; user numbers hit 145 million [Chart]

Twitter has released figures saying that mobile use has leapt 62% since mid-April as a range of new official apps for the iPhone, Blackberry and Android come online.

Twitter said 16% of all new users to Twitter start out on mobile as opposed to the web (how things change), as opposed to the 5% before it launched its first Twitter-branded mobile client.

The rise in mobile use and new users has pushed Twitter’s overall numbers to around 145 million.

In a blog post, Twitter founder Evan Williams said that addressing mobile had been one of the major issues that it had focused on since its Twitter developer conference Chirp four months ago.

“I talked about how ‘Twitter is too hard’ and what we’re doing to address that. One major area of difficulty I highlighted was getting Twitter on your phone. We did iPhone user tests and confirmed that even though there was a plethora of third-party Twitter apps, people were having trouble finding and selecting one because none were called ‘Twitter’. This kept them from using Twitter at all. For this reason, we acquired Tweetie and turned it into Twitter for iPhone, complete with a new user sign-up experience.

“We quickly understood that we were doing users a disservice by not having a great client on each of the major mobile platforms. So, we took a similar approach with Twitter for BlackBerry (developed by RIM) and Twitter for Android, which launched a new version this week,” Williams wrote.

Williams said that acquisition and launch of officially sanctioned mobile apps for Twitter has had, as the figures show, the intended effect and are bringing more people into the Twitter world.

Better than that for Twitter the mobile apps are attracting and retaining active users with 46% of regular users making mobile a frequent part of their Twitter experience.

Twitter said that its Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for BlackBerry apps are now two of the most popular ways to use Twitter.

More surprising is that other top ways people use the service as the chart above shows from (data is from the last 30 days based on number of unique users). As while smart phone apps are important to Twitter its own mobile service, m.Twitter, is used by even more people.

While Tweetdeck might appear low it is worth remembering that those that do use it are among the most active users of Twitter.
