Social media map of the world – how it changed: 2007 -2010 [Infographic]
This is cool. As a tribute to XKCD’s ‘Map of Online Communities’ that was created way back in the day (or 2007 as I like to call it), Flowtown have re-created the map and updated it for 2010.
It highlights very well how our online world has changed. Back in 2007 people spent a good deal of times in places called Yahoo!, MySpace and AOL — those old timers and their strange habits. Jump forward to the 2010 map and these places are barely visible.
Flash forward to 2010 and you will hardly recognise the old place.

I love the way they’ve spelt Habbo wrong on the new map. Muppets…
Lol, just saw that. Will make finding the Habbo hotel hard.
That’s nice, wonderful mapping of internet baby
what’s next 2 years ahead?
Yeah, some mistakes, and people will always pick holes in how big each thing is, but an original way of showing information. And everyone likes a map.
I love that the Downfall vids get their own ‘cape’ and the Lolcats their own island. There should be a special tundra for kitten videos, though, and a cave of oversharing.
Nice view of things. If anyone is interested in looking into such considerations deeper I would recommend reading 8W8 – Global Space Tribes or visiting 8w8.com. This is about a world modelling taking digital and non-digital elements and factors into account. Very comprehensive stuff … and without opinion. Just a tool or way of seeing the world nowadays. facebakers.com is good also btw., but it is just statistics.
Creative map of the social media influence. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks for mentioning 8W8.com that is very cool and worth a look.
I notice it has a rising island of Google Buzz, that’s clearly going to turn into the island of Google Me – or whatever they call their social network.
Sea of personal information will clearly be another major issue and could wash away one or two.
intersting but does it have the conenctions well-defined, or in fact defied at all. Why is LinkedIn so, apparently, detatched?
I thought LinkedIn like YouTube, Match are continents in their own right.
I love the YouTube triangle of Viral videos aka the vortex of time suck.
Hmmmm…Habo is an actual place in Sweden…and I assume it has less than 178 million inhabitants…lol! How could they miss that typo?
