With so much free news, The Times columnists need to have considerable resonance and/or be thought of as great/leading opinion-shapers.

They are too far behind the curve to play on the Lifestyle/entertainment & exclusive access game as done by O2, Amex, Orange, Virgin to name a few...it's unclear where the real tie-in and value lies for their readership... apart from online subscriptions being cheaper than buying the broadsheet.

For the moment, I think paywalls in isolation may only really work within financial media and trade press, or for brands that have overwhelming domestic brand loyalty and international relevance.

The pay wall has a knock on effect. I now no longer buy the daily paper either which I would do when I was travelling. I have discovered equally good journalists on other papers.

News International have also just increased the price of the printed Sunday Times by an unjustifiable 10% so I have stopped buying that too.

Add to this the news today that pubs are stopping subscriptions for Sky Sports due to a 33% increase in the costs - to £20,000 per year!

News International are clearly profiteering which I hope will lead them to fall flat on their face.

Just have a look at the Times on Alexa , the 6 month graph tells the story. They were a top 250 site now they just scrape in the top 2000 whilst the rest of the UK papers have all risen slightly.

He implemented one at The Times on July 1st and traffic has since plummeted by more than two thirds. Early reports said that The Times website was a ghost town with no one subscribing.
[...] Last month sources quoted by US media columnist Michael Wolff said that no one was subscribing to The Times paywall. Wolff wrote: “My sources say that not only is nobody subscribing to the website, but subscribers to the paper itself—who have free access to the site—are not going beyond the registration page. It’s an empty world.” [...]
