Tumblr on the rise as media brands like New York Times set up shop

The New York Times is getting on the Tumblr bandwagon. No news of what it will do, but its use of it points to a trend among big media brands, which are all starting to pay attention to the blogging service.

The The New Yorker and Newsweek also have their own Tumblr pages as has The Huffington Post . The Atlantic also looks to be readying a Tumblr as well theatlantic.tumblr.com.

So far all the New York Times has posted on its Tumblr page is a “coming soon” announcement. Its going to be very interesting to see what it does with the space and what content it pulls out from the newspaper site.

In an interview with MediaShift in November, Jennifer Preston the paper’s social media editor, said: “We’re going to be doing something interesting very soon with Tumblr. The really fun part of this whole moment is that you can really play in the space and have fun and figure out what works. And if it doesn’t work, that’s okay, you can try something else.”

I like what Newsweek does with its mix of quotes, images and videos. The New Yorker does something very similar. The New York Observer speculates that the New York Times may use the page as a personal diary “taking the voice of one editor (like Newsweek’s Mark Coatney). Or maybe it will become a sort of unofficial publicity page where The Times snipes back at its critics —  a sort of anti-public editor blogspace”.

This is all in keeping with the term people talk about when referring to Tumblr (and Twitter) which is light blogging. Anyone else seen any good Tumblr examples?
