MTV launches search for a $100k Twitter jockey

People I urge you to cast your minds back. Do you remember VJs? You know video jockeys – well now MTV is searching for its first MTV TJ – that’s a Twitter Jockey to you my friend.

To honest it should really be a SMJ (social media jockey), but I fear that people might have too much fun with that. Well that’s what someone said in the office.

The lucky candidate will be hired to become the face and voice for MTV across social media platforms, including MTV.com. They will also get a $100,000 dollar salary.

It is being launched in partnership with American Express’ Zync card kicking off at zync.mtv.com where 20 social media types compete head-to-head in Twitter challenges. There are still two slots left. You can nominate yourself or co-worker right now. I’ve nominated my boss.

The search will culminate in a TV finale on August 8, when the MTV viewing audience will choose the winning candidate from the final five.

Pretty cool job really. This person will be catapulted to social media fame.

The creation of the MTV Twit Jock builds on MTV use social media that has included some pretty neat implementations like its Twitter visualizations for award shows and chat widgets for the likes of the scarily watchable ‘The Jersey Shore’.

Funnily enough, talking of VJ MTV is calling this the modern day version of that once and future media role. Was there ever a mobile jock? Watch out jocks are on the move kids. I guess they were holding back on that one until the year of the mobile was finally confirmed. Is it confirmed yet?

While says that while MTV VJ had a one-way dialog in reporting music and pop culture-related news, the MTV TJ will actively engage MTV’s social media audience — answering questions and highlighting their interests.

There will be plenty of behind-the-scenes information, links and exclusive content across MTV.com, Twitter, Facebook, blogs and in 30-second sponsored on-air interstitials.
