Obama hates the iPad…and the Xbox and the PS3
Hold on a second, just how did Barrack Obama win that election again? Speaking at the commencement address at Hampton University on Sunday the president let rip at Apple’s must have (gimme gimme) iPad as well as other a whole bunch of other tech.
Speaking at Hampton, which is the historically-black college in Virginia, he didn’t stop at the iPad, but marched on to diss all kinds of super fun technology that some of us just can’t be without including the Xbox and the Playstation. Doesn’t he know that you can get social networking on these games platform (like Facebook and Twitter), which are used by the kids…who helped get him elected?
“You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t rank all that high on the truth meter. With iPods and iPads; Xboxes and PlayStations; information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment. All of this is not only putting new pressures on you; it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy.
“It’s a period of breathtaking change, like few others in our history. We can’t stop these changes, but we can adapt to them. And education is what can allow us to do so. It can fortify you, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of your own time.”
Obama had attended the commencement to pic up an honorary doctorate for contributions to “Kenyan Marxism studies”. Surely Karl Marx would have used an iPad, what better way could there be for workers of the world to unite?
And when he talks about “adapting” these changes, surely he is talking about developing some socially useful apps, no?
